Characteristics of extratropical cyclones and precursors to windstorms in northern Europe

چکیده

Abstract. Extratropical cyclones play a major role in the atmospheric circulation and weather variability can cause widespread damage destruction. northern Europe, which is located at end of North Atlantic storm track, have been less studied than extratropical elsewhere. Our study investigates windstorms Europe (which this covers Norway; Sweden; Finland; Estonia; parts Baltic, Norwegian, Barents seas) by analysing their characteristics, spatial temporal evolution, precursors. We examine cold warm seasons separately to determine seasonal differences. track all create cyclone composites, use an ensemble sensitivity method analyse The analysis novel studies where linear regression used statistically identify what variables possibly influence subsequent evolution cyclones. investigate windstorm precursors for both minimum mean sea level pressure (MSLP) maximum 10 m wind gusts. annual number has large inter-annual no significant trends during 1980–2019. Rossby wave breaking, the upper level jet, and serial clustering of extratropical cyclones in western Europe

Winter 2013/14 was the stormiest on record for the UK and was characterized by recurrent clustering of extratropical cyclones. This clustering was associated with a strong, straight and persistent North Atlantic jet and was also associated with Rossby wave breaking (RWB) on both flanks, pinning the jet in place. The occurrence of RWB and cyclone clustering is further studied in 36 years of the ...

Wind Power Ramps Driven by Windstorms and Cyclones

The increase in the wind power predictability assumes a very important role for secure power system operation at minimum costs, especially in situations with severe changes in wind power production. In order to improve the forecast of such events, also known as “wind power ramp events”, the underlying role of some severe meteorological phenomena in triggering wind power ramps must be clearly un...

The Extratropical Transition of Tropical Cyclones

The objective is to investigate the physical processes that occur as a tropical cyclone interacts with the environment such that intensity and structure changes occur. Specific interactions being studied are with baroclinic environments in the midlatitudes during extratropical transition. During extratropical transition, radical changes to the storm structure occur as vertical wind shear and in...

The Dynamics of Extratropical Oceanic Cyclones

A temperature structure appropriate for maritime areas is employed to find exact solutions to the non-linear quasi-geostrophic omega and vorticity equations, using a procedure similar to that used in a quasigeostrophic model by Sanders (1971). Results are qualitatively similar to those found in the latter model, and thus, are consistent with the traditional baroclinic stability theory. The prin...

Aerosol optical depth distribution in extratropical cyclones over the Northern Hemisphere oceans

Using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer and an extratropical cyclone database, the climatological distribution of aerosol optical depth (AOD) in extratropical cyclones is explored based solely on observations. Cyclone-centered composites of aerosol optical depth are constructed for the Northern Hemisphere midlatitude ocean regions, and their seasonal variations are examined. These c...
